We are located in Coral Gables, just south of Miami, in one of the most culturally diverse areas in the United States. Not only Spanish-with its many inflections-but Creole, French, Portuguese, and Italian are increasingly heard along the streets, in shops, restaurants, and offices, and on the university campuses of greater Miami. With students from around the world, the University of Miami is truly an international learning institution and South Florida an ideal location to gain a broader perspective of the interconnectedness of world cultures.

Through its courses dedicated to the study of languages, literatures, and cultures, our department offers you an exciting opportunity to engage in a learning experience aimed at developing global literacy. Global literacy (GL) is the ability to participate in sociocultural practices by both interacting with others in different languages and by creating, presenting, and interpreting ideas through oral and written texts in more than one language. You cannot be global if you live in only one language. GL includes written and oral communication, critical thinking and social responsibility, and appreciation of cultural artifacts, artistic products, and new technologies in more than one language. Whether you opt for a career in education, or in business, economics, law, medicine, politics, the arts, and the social sciences, our courses will enrich your life beyond your expectations as you acquire a deeper understanding of your own and of others' linguistic and cultural heritage.
